2nd week

Growth of the baby

From second week onwards your baby grows in your womb.
Most of the time your baby implants in your womb and grows quite well. During implantation your baby anchors itself to the womb to get nutrients to grow. By this time, your baby is a small blob of cells. From this blob of cells, the placenta, membranes and the actual baby develops later in the pregnancy. During implantation, the placenta starts to form. As placenta develops your baby delves into the wall of the womb. To be specific, the baby anchors itself to the inner lining of the womb (endometrium).

Remember that there are certain rare occasions where your baby implants at abnormal locations. This is called an ectopic pregnancy. If that is the case, you will later get severe abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding with clots and altered darkened blood. A scan shows where the ectopic pregnancy is and you might need surgery.
The small blob of cells change shape to transform into a hollow ball with a small group of cells stuck to one pole on the inside. This inner cell group transforms into a flat disk of cells. This disk is the actual baby. The shell of the hollow ball develops into the placenta and the membranes later.

How life changes for mommy

Pregnancy tests come up as positive from late this week. Two brown lines on that urine dipstick makes you so happy. You start thinking about what to get for the baby when it is born. You start thinking if your baby would be a girl or a boy. Although fertilization determines the sex of the baby, it is too early to tell the sex of the baby with any test or scan. Everybody around you congratulate you on being pregnant. You don’t remember being so happy in your entire life. Apart from feeling the best, there are no obvious physical changes in your body.

What to do for a happy pregnancy

Just try your best to stick to healthy habits. A balanced diet is essential. Your loved ones try to feed you up saying that you need to eat for two. But your baby is tiny at the moment and it does not need the amount of energy you get with all those extra food. Eating for two at this time will only make you gain extra weight. Keep in mind that it is easy to gain weight but it is very difficult to lose weight. See a nutritionist and get a good diet plan. That will keep you from over-eating, and you will be that much happier. Don’t forget to take your vitamins and iron tablets.
